I have a newish adminstration job in where I have a junior to manage, I have managed before but in retail and the people I managed were easy to communicate with. This junior has been in the company longer than I have and has become 'set in her ways' I have had a polite chat with her to thank her for her support etc. I thought all was well and told her I will be introducing a few changes to make our lives easier.

I had a chat with my boss who told me that my being there has got her back up, he said it's not personal and I didn't take it as such, but now i'm not really sure how to approach her knowing that she 'resents' my being there. My boss spoke to her and explained that she is the junior so MY word is final.

How should I approach her? I always work hard and give my empolyer more that they expect, I am concerned because her performance is a reflection on me and I ALWAYS perform! My concern is that her resentment will result in her making my life difficult.

Any suggestions?

BTW- My boss sopke to her off his own back, infact I knew nothing of it until late last week, so he obviously sees the problem with her attitude

She probably resents the fact that the company brought you in instead of promoting her. That is where the issue comes in. It's not personal really.

There is also a level of 'thanking her for her support' that comes of as more of an insult than a compliment. There is a point where you make yourself seem like the expert and all she does is what you tell her to do. Instead of thanking her for her support, thank her for her expertise. She has been with the company for so long and knows how to get things done. You do have some new ideas you would like to try which will be a little different for everyone and would appreciate any suggestions she has.

One sentence makes it sound like this is more about you. You say her performance is a reflection on you and you ALWAYS perform. While that is true, her performance is also a reflection on her and her ability to perform. Don't forget that. Let her do her job well (which she has obviously been doing for them to keep her), but make a few changes for hwo you would like things done. Let her recieve her own praise for her ideas and make sure she knows she is an integral part of the TEAM!!

You talk about making your life difficult. While her being overlooked for the position is likely to cause some resentment initially, in time she will see that you were right for the job. Just make sure you work with her, not just making her work for you. If her actions do make your life terribly difficult, in time you may have a decision to make. But make sure it is really her making life difficult and not just you making major changes that affect the entire department, making everyone elses life dfficult instead.

Time leadership is essential, purchase your self an afternoon planner. They can also be picked up at any workplace presents retailer or Walmart. After you're assigned homework or a assignment, write it down whilst it is due. Some say the act of writing some thing down on my own, makes you much more likely to do not forget to do it. Make definite to appear on a daily basis and notice what you have got to do within the upcoming week, and prioritize matters for this reason. Don't attempt to cram for assessments, it is higher to depart the day earlier than an examination for overview, now not studying new fabric. Good good fortune!
