I would have to go with JEB Stuart. He was a great leader an dwas able to go around the Federal Army a couple different times. Kind of makes you wonder what kind of an impact he would of had if he hadn't died so early. There are more greats that one could add on the list such as Custer, Sheridan, Fitzhugh Lee, Wade Hampton, Philip St. George Cook, Turner Ashby, Thomas Rosser, William Quantrill and John Mosby. They were all great cavalry leaders.

And just something for Fenris. Pickett, the great leader that he was, wasn't a cavalry general. He commanded the the Confederate Armies First Corps. And is Custer not Custard!

Pickett or Custard were both great Cavalry leaders! Pickett's was just screwed in Gettysburg his leadership was actually superb as were his cavalry. Custard had a great success at raiding with his Calvary.

Hope that helps

everyone who likes J.E.B. Stuart should consider:

the role of cavalry is to scout, locate the enemy and report back.

The role is not to go glory riding through the countryside whoopin' and hollerin' and carrying the flag.

Stuart, in his most important campaign, failed Lee disastrously, in that he never located and reported the size and position and movement of Meade's army until well after it was negated with Lee at Gettysburg. Lee would almost certainly have picked another time and place to fight if he had known where his enemy was.

There was serious movement within the Confederate High Command to fire Stuart after Gettysburg. Lee, the old softy, let him stay.

I don't think there's really any debate, Jeb Stuart wins that one hands down, although he had the tendency of being somewhat unreliable in his role as a scout for Lee's army.

Jackson and Pickett were not cavalry officers, they both commanded infantry.
