For the most part, high school games are on Fridays, college on Saturdays, so that leaves Sundays for NFL. A lot of people follow each level of football competition.

Historically they always have been on Sundays.
Until Thanksgiving games and Monday night football came along.
Now we have Thursday night football and even some games on Saturdays now.

Because Sunday is when most people are off and they can't put it on Saturday because NCAAF is on that day.

because its football and bodies cant constantly take a beating every other day... they need rest.
