The practice of using steamy towels or hot water is intended to soften the whiskers, and it does do that, however for the closest shave with a blade icy cold water may give better results. Each whisker has a root that is surrounded in a rather tight sheath, the hair follicle. Attatched to the hair follicle is a minute muscle fibre called the erector pilea muscle. This muscle contracts when exposed to cold, and causes the whisker to "bristle" or stand up at a 90 degree angle to the skin. This allows the blade to cut the whisker as close to the skin and at a 90 degree angle. When the skin warms, the muscle relaxes, and the hair retracts slightly into the follicle. The result is a closer shave. Having said all that, IMHO, the most comfortable shave is accomplished with hot water and/or a steamy towel. I am not certain which is better- these are two different techniques- different, not better or worse...

In my own opinion: water that is hot enough but not scalding would be good cause it opens the pours and would allow you to get more of the hair cut in deeper than cold water would.
However, with cold water, it would close the pours and cause the hair to stand up stiffer which may be easier to cut off...but, I believe, it could cause more cuts on the face also.
Therefore, I'm going to go along with the hot water as I believe that once you place
the cream on your face, it helps the razor to slide over the area easier and you don't have stubble.
This is only for those who don't use electric razors. Smile.

Barbers usually place a steaming towel over the face before shaving the customer's face. This is because the heat opens the pores allowing the maximum close shave possible. The whiskers are also softer and therefore, a smoother shave.

Hot water, it opens your pores to allow for a deeper shave. Splash cold water over your face when you've finished shaving to close the pores.

Cold water can cause "goose bumps", which are easily irritated by blades.
