Because Hip Hop is about money and women, whereas Rock is a bit more escapist singing about Cars, Elevators, Wizards, Planets and everything inbetween helping you to forget the world for a few minutes instead of trying to better your situation in Hip Hop.

Speaking for myself, from what I see Hip Hop is usually someone talking over someone elses music. Most of what's on top of the charts is very shallow and meaningless...lyrics about how much "ice" they wear, what kind of cars they (pretend) to drive, b*****s and h**s/disrepecting women, and referring to themselves as ni**as, shooting each other and trying to be "hard". Not that rock doesn't cover some of the same subjects but just not to the same extent.
I'm not trashing the whole Hip Hop genre, because I know there are some artisctic hip hop artists out there. It's too bad they aren't getting the recognition they deserve.

I agree with one of the first answers, i dont think it does really. Its only the die hard rock fans that refuse to accept hip hop as a serious genre
I respect all music, i dont think it matters who made it, or how much time went into making it or how it was made (instruments or not), as long as it means something to someone and makes someone happy when they listen to it, then it has fulfilled its purpose, so it deserves respect

Because generally, rock music involves the use of instruments.
Modern Hip-hop is so poorly produced - it's just rubbish vocals over a synthesised beat, not to mention the messages they send out.
Old Hip-hop however... I respect that!

For a number of reasons?
1. Despite its origins as black music form rock is made & listened to predominantly by white people including the journalists who review most music.
2. Despite attempting to come off as open minded Rock heads cannot (possibly refuse to) appreciate the idea of writing 3 verses (40 seconds each) of lyrics for one song.
3. Rock heads are unfamilliar with the idea of struggle & the appreciation which comes from buying nice clothes when you have had to wear hand me downs as a kid.
4. How many poor kids do you know who have access to drums and electric guitars? Exactly which is why beatboxers exist.
I challenge anybody to name a music which allows you as an individual (not a band) to be as expressive. If you are going to judge hip hop judge it not by the corporate american trash served to you via MTV (where you can also find the rock you talk of) but by the kids in the street rhyming off the top of the head about the lack of job opportunities in his neighbourhood.

Maybe because in rock music, the band members are musicians, who play their own instruments, and write their own music. In hip hop, the artist stands on stage, while a sampling of the rock musicians music is played behind them.

I wouldn't have said it did. If anything, at least hip hop artists get recognition for their talents where as it goes more unnoticed in rock music

because in general, it requires a lot more to produce rock music and play it live, etc. hip hop is still difficult to create, write lyrics etc. but when playing live all you have to do is remember your lyrics.

Because it has been around for a good three or four decades longer than hip hop.
That is really the only reason.

Hip Hop/Rap= songs about shooting people or 'popping caps in a**es, sex, drugs and drinks, sex, women, magic sticks, sex, and double antandras (sp?) like:
"I'll take you to da candy shop, I'll let you lick the lollipop"
Rock= not so must to do about sex (unless you listen to Bloodhound Gang), actually talks about something other than sex and won't get kids into trouble about singing:
"Don't cha wish ya girlfriend was a freak like me?"
