Coal mines contributed in two ways: the use of steam engines to power pumps in the mines was a stimulus to invention and the coal was used to power the second generation of mills, machines, etc ( the first was water power ).

There was stimulation of invention ( weaving, Watt's governor for steam engines ) and the British society was ready for it since the "common man" experienced fewer obstacles to exploiting the business consequences of innovation and industriousness. The influence of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations was also a stimulus with the propertied classes, albeit not motivated to supplement their wealth creation through agriculture andland-holding, were not averse to have an entrepreneurial class arise. The principles of free trade made it possible for the U.K. to find markets for the manufactured goods that the Industrial Revolution provided.
