All doujin means is self published amateur work. That can be anything from video games to manga to music.
In America the equivalent would be fanfiction or a garage band who sells their own copies of their music.
A doujin doesn't have to be based off other works as well- it can be entirely original. However, a lot of written works (eg manga and novels- aka doujinshi) do borrow characters from famous series like Naruto, Bleach, and pretty much everything else.

Doujin is a short form of the original Japanese word, "doujinshi". I'm not really sure of its real meaning, but it is a fancomic made by amateurs to appreciate / parodize the original:
1. Comics or cartoons;
2. Mangas, games or animes;
3. Artists (singers, bands, actors...); or
4. Personalities.
Since they are made by amateur manga artists, it's common to see unlikely events happening, such as:
1. Homosexual scenes (ga* or l*sbian);
2. Pr0n or raep;
3. "...and they lived happily ever after" stuffs, or "tragic" endings.
And of course, the quality of arts vary, depending of the manga artists. Some are beautiful, some are so-so, some hideous... this is common. Prices also vary; but normally higher than original comics or manga, and can only be bought either in Japan (in case of original doujinshi), or online shops or auctions sites. =^_^=

A Japanese word meaning a work published by a specific interest group for other members of that interest group. Doujinshi usually refers to fan made manga or soft. Because of the copyright laws in Japan fans can get away with making and selling doujinshi featuring their favorite characters from anime and video games although doujinshi also often times feature original characters and stories. A common misunderstanding is that all doujinshi are x-rated fan works but this is not always the case.

doujinshi?
let me give an example: if i create a manga using naruto and ino and make them fall in love... that would be a doujinshi cuz its based off of something that is already created and made into something different from the story line. does that make sense??
well, a manga artist can also make doujinshi based on their works. lets say i was a famous manga ka and created a manga called "koi"
well, i would take the characters from koi and create a short story or even another manga where they are doing things completley different from their original story.
ex. if it were a shojo manga and i made it into a shounen for fun or to twist things up.... thats doujinshi. thats just one example.
i hope that made sense....lol!
