does not matter which one you use, you will never find US only...
for example I run a UK business, but my website is hosted in the US. so sites like mine will always appear in US listings...
use a search including the name of a particular state will help you to increase the chances of local results only

You won't get just US sites as Google.com will have sites indexed from all over the globe.
It's the other side of the coin that is more relevant in that you won't have TLDs that are non country specific being indexed on country specific Google pages. For example .it on Google UK.
