I agree with LadyBug...a good smoking cessation class can be very helpful. If it's a good one, they'll give you lots more methods and encourage group members to support each other.

A little mental trick that has helped me...say to yourself, "I can have another cigarette....later". See how long you can make "later". Helps take the pressure off.

Another thing that has helped me...look at what triggers the urge, i.e. do you need it to think? to relax? to give you quick energy for a task? do certain foods make you want to smoke?

Keeping busy can help, but not just frantic busyness, which can make you just want to smoke more. If you're a list person, try making a list every night of what you want to accomplish the next day. Then the next day, space out your cigarettes during tasks. And make sure to cross out each task as you do them so you have a sense of accomplishment.

A really good read..."Overcoming Addictions" by Deepak Chopra, M.D.

Hope these help!

i used one prevailing thought in my head...

The next cigarette is going to do nothing for me that I haven't already experienced!

Then I look at the total cost on a yearly basis... in CA we are paying $4.50 a pack, when I was in Chicago they wanted $7-$11 a pack... if you are smoking a pack a day that equates to somewhere between $1650-$4000/year... even if you are buying cartons it's over a $1000/year!

So, stop smoking and go use the money for a vacation fund! I can go to Hawaii each year for that amount of money!!!

There is a new oral medication that people are raving about but I don't know what it's called. It takes a doctor's prescription.

I would also suggest you attend a smoking cessation class. They teach you what you need to do with your hands and at "critical" moments when you would normally would smoke.

I quit cold turkey in 1991 when nothing but that awful gum was available!!! Best thing I've ever done for me!

Good luck.

Champix in Australia and Chantix in America are supposed to have a 40% success rate. They are both are exactly the same actually.

Perhaps a search for "quit smoking" + "natural ways" might be of interest.
