An external hard drive (hope you mean 3.5") would work just as well. If you want to carry a big box (relatively speaking - to a 2.5" portable hard drive), its upto you.
With an external hard drive, you will also have to carry the power adapter. The portable hard drive works off the USB power connection (same connection for data and power).
I would definitely take a portable one - only its generally more expensive (cost per MB).

Portable External Hard Drives are designed to withstand shocks and vibrations better than their larger counterparts which are meant to stay in one place. Also, you can get a hard case to further protect the portable drive. You would need to carry a power supply and find an electric outlet for a regular external drive. Portables only need their USB or Firewire cables, which will fit into a hard case.

If packed properly, it can travel just as well as the laptop.

Many external drive, use a laptop hard drive inside anyway.

The option I took, was to purchase a new hard drive for my laptop, which maxed out at 160GB due to the 9.5mm thickness. I had the original drive cloned onto the new drive by a local tech. at Best Buy. This gave me all of my files and programs on a 160GB drive instead of the 80 GB drive I originally had. Then for $25 I purchased a USB external hard drive housing on eBay, and installed the 80GB drive in that.

portable is the same as external HD.
Get a 2.5", and ur set. Dont get a big size, too hard to carry.
Prices are getting lower.

Providing you have XP or Vista as an operating system any external USB drive will work. For earlier operating systems you may have to load the drivers. External drives are quite robust so you are unlikely to hurt it during transportation.

Get yourself on of those flash drives that can hold 4 gig or larger. It plugs into your USB port and when you are done with it, just unplug and put it into your pocket.
