I want to buy a tree for my girlfriend for Christmas but I would like it to be 1) currently smallish 2) able to survive in a pot for the next year. We hope to move out in a years time and I'd like to be able to take it with us...

What trees fit the criteria?

Any tree.
Seriously, if you look after it, any tree will be ok.
I grow trees from seed and keep them in small pots, they are fine as long as you feed them.
Good luck, nice idea.

Get a Norfolk Island Pine.
It's like a Christmas tree. I bought one about 12 years ago and it's still in the same BIG pot, but the original tree dried up and had to be cut off, but it had a baby and it's about 3 ft. tall now. It didn't like intense hot sun of Florida's summer, so I keep it in the shade.

Bay trees are happy in pots for many years with minimal care, and can be planted out. They have the benefit of being evergreen and a useful herb.
You can buy them potted, pruned into all-sorts of shapes, and hugely over-priced at most garden centers.
(If you live reasonably southerly in the U.K., find somewhere that they grow naturally, and beg a seedling).

Camellias will survive in a pot for many years. They bloom in the UK around Feb/March. It is an outdoor plant which makes a lovely present. I have had two for over 15 years and I have moved them from house to house.

A Forsythia or Hammamelis (which hazel) both look great in pots and you can move them near to the house for their fantastic show in winter and spring when everything else is looking drab, and then tuck them out of the way for the rest of the summer. :-)

Most trees are ok. I currently have a contorted hazel, ginko biloba, eucalyptus and an acer in pots. They are absolutely fine and are thriving. Nice idea!

Citrus trees do well indoors in pots, and you get the fruit too. Have also seen bananas inside...they look really impressive.
