People get tired of working for the collective. They start to feel like indentured servants then slaves. The strongest always end up on the top of the pile. Capitalism gives everyone the opportunity to climb that pile, where socialism and communism do not.

In theory, Communism was designed to be a closed system, wherein all labor and resources were devoted to the creation of goods and services for the people who performed the labor and collectively owned the land. But in real life, every place where Communism was attempted had to deal with adverse foreign currency markets, foreign trade imbalances, and massive assaults on the workers' morale from outside sources, like propaganda warfare and actual invasions. For example, Nicaragua had to spend 80% of their GNP to fend off the U.S.-funded Contras, leaving only 20% to provide for the citizenry. Communism is not so profitable as to be able to wage continuous war with outside forces such as the U.S., which was willing to spend as much as it took to "prove" them wrong. Due to this effect, we never saw whether a true Communist economy could work. And yes, corrupt leaders can destroy ANY system - look also at Bushco and you will realize this is happening now to us...

Because someone has to be in charge, and that person is usually corrupt. That trickles down to everyone, and then you are cheating the populace. Mao, Castro, the Kims, Stalin, Ho, were all corrupt. And killed millions.
Military, athletes, and officials are given the perks, while the laborer tries to survive.
For a supposedly equal system, it is anything but.
