Making fun of handicapped people is just plain rude. I work with Special Olympics and there are people with all kinds of handicaps. If I ever catch someone making fun of any handicapped people, then I have a BIG conversation with them.

I also work at a MRDD facility. I cringe when I hear People call each other "retarded". If they only knew the obstacles these special people have to overcome. And there are other kinds of disabilities too. My brother and sister in law both have MS. My brother is only 43 and totally wheelchair bound and almost totally blind. I think this goes for all types of people, even overweight or people who look different for whatever reason. I hate it when anyone makes fun of another. I have never allowed my children to do this.

And how are you going to "ban" behaviour? How would you make a distinction between someone using the wrong word because they are not up to scratch with the jargon and someone who is doing it out of bigotry? Banning such behaviour will make the animosity and bigotry attitude to disability even worse.
Would you ban me because I call one of my friends a "cripple"? He has CP and we know each others for nearly 10 years and sometimes I make jokes about his condition (NOT his disability). Is that wrong? He doesn't think so.
I think you have the right attitude but need to know a lot more about the whole picture of how society perceive disability and to think more clearly before being gung-ho in what should be done. I have been there and done that in my early years. Keep on learning and gain more experience.

I agree! I feel sad and angry reading your message. What kind of person would make fun of disabled people. If I had to choose between being a disabled person or the kind of person that makes fun of them, I would choose to be disabled! For you are right the ones making fun and laughing at someone disadvantages truly are the retarded!

If it's done in a mean and ficicous manner, yes indeed, it is wrong. That applies to all disabled and handicapped folks.....across the board. Live and let live.....
I have some disabilites and I have a friend or two that likes to tease and make jokes. I thank heaven for them. They don't mean any harm and I know this up front and it does help me laugh at myself. It reminds me not to take life so doggone serious all of the time.

Some people have good sense of humor that are in wheel chair compares to other that don't.
Like that first X-Men movie when Wolverine ask Xavier "What is your power?" "Wheel?" if you didn't laugh then there is something wrong with you because the director and the script writer made the movie.
Making fun of people to insult or have no humor is wrong. Now there is a difference.

It's wrong to make fun of someone who is disabled or has special needs. I believe that by doing so one day it will come back to you in life. The people who do these things are ignorant and really need to grow up because what they are doing is so childish and wrong in so many ways.

I think it takes a person a great deal of maturity to realize that everyone should be shown compassion from the heart. I wonder if those who don't show it have not gone through enough humbling experiences themselves to understand the position of another.
Parents can also play a big part in teaching their children how to treat others with kindness, and learning how to put themselves in another person's shoes.
I see the point you are trying to make, and that is that those who poke fun at others are the ones to be pitied. I agree with that.

i have a disability and also work in the disability sector. it is my belief that people only make fun of what they do not know. did you know that a majority of people have never come in contact with someone with a disability so instead of hating people why don't you educate them. people tend to be embarrassed and don't know what to do. help them understand and let them know we are like everybody else. you are only fueling the fire rather then helping the cause. remember education is a powerful tool.
