I know the group size that is supposed to fit is the 92 but the newer M3's use the 48 so I'm wondering if I can use that because the 92 has to be special ordered.

Dealer OEM parts are always much more than buying a part elsewhere... Be it a BMW or a Yugo! There is no harm here going outside the dealership.

With that... The Autozone Duralast 48-DL (type 48 and type 91 are same thing) should fit fine. It also has a vent kit, a 7 year warranty and should only cost $75 or so. OEM will be closer to $200.00!

This 48/91 will be a little smaller than a 92 but should hook right up with out issue. DO NOT SKIP REPLACING THE VENT TUBING!

If you or your friend has a BMWCCA membership (which qualifies you for a discount), try calling around the dealers in your area. You might be surprised at the cost of the battery.

My buddy bought an original BMW battery from his dealer for his E36 in the VA/DC area for $80. But his car is a 318ti. So yours might be more expensive, but I doubt it would be as much as $200 though.

Thats what makes Beemers so expensive to maintain. The parts, even the batteries, are proprietary to BMW and they have you by the ying yang when it comes to price.
