You do need some sort of software but even basic programs like Windows Media Player will play DVD's. Make certain the disc drive plays DVD discs. All operating systems, Windows, Mac, Linux come with a DVD playing program installed from the start.

hi mate
windows media player will actually play dvd movies for you, although the quality isnt as good as some other third party software
the most popular dvd playback software is "power dvd" from http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_1_ENU.html
this is a dedicated dvd player which is used by thousands of pc users
you can normally pick this up for less than £20 from most computer retailers, however you can download a free 30 day trial at http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/download/trials_1_ENU.html
power dvd 7 also has high defenition compatibility and Support for hardware acceleration and advanced de-interlacing
hope this helps
good luck mate !

You should just be able to pop it in the DVD drawer, and it will auto play.
Depends how old your 'puter is, but most have media players built in.
