As you have written (but may not mean):-
√3 x = 9
x = 9 / √3
x = 9√3 / 3
x = 3√3

You may have meant:-
√3(x + 3) - 4 = 8
√3(x + 3) = 12
(x + 3) = 12 / √3
x = 12 / √3 - 3
x = 3 (4√3 - 1)

have to square both sides first:

\/3x + 3 - 4 = 8
first combine + 3 and -4 using laws of signed numbers.

\/3x - 1 = 8
Now square both sides to clear the radical:

8*8 = 64

3x-1
3x-1
-------
9x^2 -3x
.........-3x +1
-----------------
9x^2 -6x +1 = 64
now factor:it:

9x^2 -6x + 1 -64 = 0

9x^2 -6x -63 =0

[3x - 9] [3x + 7] = 0

check your work:

3x - 9
3x +7
------
9x^2 - 27x
.........+21x -63
---------------------
9x^2 - 6x -63 = 0

add 1 to each side and you get

SQR(3x) =9

square each side and you get

3x = 81

So x must equal 27.
