She's reasonably active for her age. She lives by herself, gets out of the house a lot, crochets, takes line dancing, exercises regularly, and is very close to me. I don't want to get her one of those traditional figurines, plaques, or books that have nice quotes about grandmothers, because she doesn't speak too much English...
If I were to give her something homemade and personal, what should I make? If I buy something, what are some good ideas? I'm also on a budget, so under $20 would be good.
Thank you!

If you could locate a traditional cookie recipe from her native country & bake her a batch, I think she may like that. :)

Jennifer,
IF she is not a diabetic then she would LOVE the Seven Layer Cookies that we make. They are absolutely wonderful!
7 LAYER COOKIES
Printed from COOKS.COM
1 stick butter
1 cup crushed graham cracker crumbs
1 (6 oz.) bag semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 (6 oz.) bag butterscotch chips
1 cup flaked coconut
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup pecans, chopped
Melt butter in a 9 x 13 inch baking dish.
Sprinkle other ingredients on in order as listed.
Do Not Stir Or Mix.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
Allow to cool before cutting or removing from pan.
Eliminate butterscotch chips and pecans to make another cookie called "Hello Dolly".
Have FUN,
Eds

Homemade ... you're on the right track. My favorite gift from my granddaughter was a homemade booklet with homemade coupons in it. Coupons for take GranMa to lunch, visit GranMa, go to a movie with GranMa, etc. There were 5 coupons and I loved spending the special time with my special girl.

A framed photo of the two of you would be nice.

Sometime this year ask your grandmother to teach you how to crochet. Then next Christmas crochet something for her. (Hat, slippers, afghan, dish clothes etc)

This is something I KNOW she will enjoy and treasure always: A homemade scrapbook made by you! You can visit a craft store for neat stickers, sticker quotes and decorations to add to pictures you have of her and her friends and family. My daughter made one of these for me and it's amazing how often I pick it up to reflect on my many memories of my children growing up and of myself enjoying various activities and events with my family!

Maybe a salon gift certificate? Maybe a scarf? Maybe slippers? Maybe one of those decorative heating pads? She might be sore some days after exercising?

maybe you can get a basket and fill it with movie stuff.... candy, popcorn, soda, etc. find a movie that's in her language (and has subtitles for you) and then have a movie date! you can find videos usually on amazon.com or anyother website.
