Put 3 pearls on one side of the scale, and three on the other side. If they are all real, the scale will balance, so put those 6 pearls in a pile marked "real", and skip to Step 2. If the scale does not balance, put the three heavier pearls into a pile marked real. One of the three pearls still on the scale is fake. Take one pearl out and put it in a pile marked "uncertain". Take one pearl out of the scale and move it to the other side. If the scale balances, the pearl marked as "uncertain" is fake. If the scale does not balance, the lighter side is the fake pearl.

Step 2
If on the first test, the scale balanced, and six pearls were put in the "real" pile, then there are 3 pearls remaining that need to be tested, and one is fake.Take one pearl and put it in a pile marked "uncertain". For the remaining two pearls, put one one each side of the scale. If the scale balances, the pearl marked as "uncertain" is fake. If the scale does not balance, the lighter side is the fake pearl.

Divide the peals into groups of three. Put three on one side of the scales and three on the other. If they weigh the same all are real and the fake is in the other three. If one set is lighter the fake is in that set.

Take the set of three pearls which include the fake. Put one pearl on each side on the scales. If they balance the remaining one is fake. If they don't the lightest is the fake.

Put half the pearls one side of the scale.Put the other half on the other side. Compare the weights. See which half is lighter. Find the pearl that is not red in the lighter half. The one that is not red is the fake one.
