because many people can't look beneath the surface.
some christian fundamentalists assume those bands are christian bands because they are just looking at the surface of the lyrics instead of realizing they're sarcastic or just convenient for rhyming or whatnot.

I never assume anything because like the man said when You assume You make an a** out of You and Me.
However, on the subject listen closely to the lyrics of the Black Sabbath song "After Forever" it's about as pro Christian as it gets.
But I don't think Sabbath stands for God, Satan or anybody else. They're just a damn good metal band with a penchant for dark imagery.

Some people I know assume if a band mentions the word "God" or "Lord" in any way, they must be a Christian Band. I've heard Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers, Allman Brothers Band and Black Crows all get called Christian bands.

I haven't really heard anyone assume a band is Christian just because they mention God. But honestly I don't think that happens very often. Actually I often see people accusing bands of using God's name "in vain" when they mention God. It was probably just that person, because I see people asking if Black Sabbath is satanic way more often.

To answer your last question first... There is a rock group named Godsmack.... IS that Christian rock??? (nope lead singer is reportedly a Wiccan)
Black Sabbath goes down to the depths of many things and where their Christian/Santanic thing may come from.
Speaking about God to me isn't a Christian group but a group you see has some dealing with him.
There are groups that don't mention him every verse but are considered Christian like Flyleaf as they are spiritial bands

There's people that think I Am Ghost is a Christian band because they mention God & other religious things frequently. But they aren't.

If that's the case, I really hope people don't say the Sex Pistols are a Christian band.
"God Save the Queen".
