This is a totally opinionated question.
Couple points here: Both games are disappointingly short. However, GOW will leave you hanging and waiting for a sequel. Not that H3 won't, but it's far more conclusive. It is the last installment, afterall. Leaves the rest to your imagination or books perhaps.
H3's game play- in my opinion, just a tad more difficult than GOW however GOW will last a little longer.
Halo 3 has a more overarching plot, and if you've already been engrossed in the plot then definitely go with Halo 3 to conclude it. GOW is just getting started with that plot.
Both have to do with humanity's struggle for survival against a stronger superior alien force. Where the struggle takes place, and where the aliens have come from varies between the two. I think the overall story line of GOW is just a little darker.
Halo 3 also has some excellent features which I do not believe are available on GOW. For example: you can view your game play in the movie theater and even create screen shots from it. Very cool. H3 has excellent multiplayer gaming with countless games to play with some friends or on Xbox live. For this reason- if you are a multiplayer person, H3 would be the superior game by far. (Yes, GOW has multiplayer and Xbox live- I feel H3 has far more to offer in this area).
GOW has a few things I like better. The weapons are neat in both games, but GOW has a gun with a chainsaw attachment that has wicked cool blood splatter when you use it. That can be far more satisfying than the bits of blue blood or greenish spray you get when you kill aliens on H3. GOW is definitely more gory and arguably has more varying opponents as well. (You'll notice a strong parallel between aliens in GOW and aliens in H3- Boomers, for example, might remind you of Hunters.)
The graphics in both are good. The scenery in H3 is breathtaking. In GOW it is simply dark and crumbling since you are walking around in ruins, essentially. The quality is pretty comparable.
So essentially- what are you looking for more of? Multiplayer gaming- go with H3. Larger, more encompassing plot- go with H3. A darker, more gory game go with GOW. It's up to you. Both are good games- I'd be happy with either, but figure out what's most important to you and go from there.
I hope this was helpful.

I never played Gears Of War, but I really liked Halo 3. You should check out Mass Effect too.

Halo 3 is better, but the best game out there is Call of Duty 4 modern warfare.

Virtua Fighter 5 is a PS3 unique, so except you've a magic 360 that could want to play 360 and PS3 video games, you're not any more going to be able to play Virtua Fighter 5 on the 360. i imagine DOA 4 is the in basic terms fighter pastime on the 360. yet in case you should make the definition of combating a touch better vast, you may comprise raw Vs. Smackdown, strive against nighttime round 3, Rumble Roses XX.
