KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudanese protesters demand death for teddy teacher

Hundreds of Sudanese Muslims, waving green Islamic flags, took to the streets of Khartoum on Friday demanding death for the British teacher convicted of insulting Islam after her class named a teddy bear Mohammad.

"No one lives who insults the Prophet," the protesters chanted, a day after school teacher Gillian Gibbons, 54, was sentenced to 15 days in jail and deportation from Sudan

This is why I like China, they are so easy going, they just think we foreigners are very strange and very entertaining and accept that we have weird ideas and do strange things.
Though if you wander into a restricted military zone they will detain you and phone your school to come get you - no biggie.

Religion is as Religion does .. my neighbours, both Muslims are just as disgusted as I about this incident .. and as for teaching overseas, I've done it, but in northern China (at age 64) and thoroughly enjoyed it, with no fear or recriminations and I was allowed to teach anything and talk about anything I liked .. I was teaching Advanced English to businessmen

We couldn't understand why the head of the school didn't just have a quiet word with the teacher and get the children to choose a different name. So it is disrespectful to name a teddy the Prophets name but there are more than one little boy in the class with the same name?! Huh! Doesn't make sense at all!

I know this is probably going to get me a few thumbs down, but the way the are acting is kinda pathetic, I mean the class chose the name of the bear after a member of their own class, he even admitted to it being named after him and not after their prophet, I say that she should be let go and it be left at that though I think that she would prefer the 15 days in prison rather then the lashes or execution that many want to give her.

It may just be because of us being in different cultures but still it is wrong what the rioters are talking about doing.

My heavens, I on no account were flashed, however I did accidentally flash a couple of men and women as soon as. I was once within the health facility a while again and made up our minds to take a stoll to the merchandising discipline. Well, I wasn't considering what I was once dressed in and, permit's simply say that the ones health facility robes do not go away plenty to the creativeness at the bottom. The nurse got here up from at the back of me and positioned a blanket over my shoulders . . . I was once thinking about why it was once slightly drafty again there!

I have been keeping up on that story too. It's really very sad.

You are right about China. My son and his wife spent 6 months in Taiwan teaching kindergarten aged children and they were treated very well by everyone. They really enjoyed it.

A problem, and a scary one, is that we in the west, according to our "new rules of tolerance", are supposed to accept this behavior as part of "a different culture", and put it on par with our own culture. In other words, "Who are we to question what goes on in another culture?" This is, what is now, considered the polite and 'proper' way to look at it.
