I'm in a dorm and I want a wireless router for me and couple of my friends using the university's wired connection. We can get in trouble if someone detects it and reports it. Is there a way that only my friends and I can only connect to it without others even seeing we have a connection available?

Well, yes you can hide the SSID, and you can hide the connections. BUT THE SIGNAL IS STILL BEING TRANSMITTED!!!!
So NO you can not totally hide the device. Wireless sniffers like netstumbler can still see the transmissions! (And net stumbler is a toy compared to some of the spectrum analyzers we security types use!)

Next issue, the school can also tell that a ROUTER has been attached to the network!!!! It tells them that on the wired cable!
So the statement
"We can get in trouble if someone detects it and reports it", you need to be aware the IT guys can also tell that a router was connected!

How much trouble are you willing to get into? Is it worth it?

Its too near Christmas for you to loose Santa Clause privileges.

Hide your SSID, and use a long SSID name so no one else can guess it.
