1. Look at the bottom of the turtle. (DO NOT FLIP IT OVER - This is very dangerous for the turtle.) Is the bottom shell convex (protrudes out)? If so, it's a female. If it's concave (caves in), then it's a male

2. Look at its tail. Most turtles have a hole which is called the cloaca or "vent" located on their tail. Male turtles have the vent located on the outside of their shell (farther away from the body). Female turtles have the vent located on the inside of the shell (closer to the body).

3. Examine the thickness of the tail. Male turtles often have fatter and bigger tails than the female.

Good luck!

Most turtles and tortoises:
- Adult male's plastron (belly shell) curves in, female is flat or outcurved.
- Adult male's tail is longer, and the vent is generally in the middle. Female's is shorter with the vent near the base.

In some species we can use other techniques:
Slider turtles- males have long front claws
Box turtles- in some species, the male has bright or red eyes
Red-foot Tortoises- some adult males have 'wasp waists'
Russian Tortoise- size and shape of cloacal opening

Note- you only rarely can tell the sex of a young turtle- most of them need to be 4 years old or more to do this accurately.

It depends on species.

For red eared sliders, if it has really long claws, its a male. If it has short claws, its a female.
