I used to have the same debating but I've already decided to buy Vista because eventually I need to change to Vista due to the XP obsolescence.. It is just a matter of time.

But bare in mind that Vista runs slower than XP. Check my posts below and also some related posts. Hope this can help you.

Windows Vista is a good operating system however, I prefer XP. The reason for this is most software will run on XP but none of the software I use will run on Vista. Not to mention Windows Vista, though debugged, was a rushed product from Windows in what seems to be an attempt to stay ahead of the competition. I just can't really get used to the Vista as well as I can the XP and Windows XP has certainly made a name for it's self in both Home and Business use.

Definatelly XP is more stable as it has many updates by now. Vista is a young system and still need many new updates to run smooth. However Vista need better performance but in the future more and more programs will be runing under vista only so i sugest it is better to go for vista. U can always get vista 32 bits that is more like a XP and run smooth like XP and then when u get familiar with vista get 64 bit

Chances are, if you buy a major brand computer with Vista preinstalled, the model you buy would be tested for compatibility with Vista.

As to whether Vista is "bad", opinions differ. Vista is definitely heavier than XP, so other things being equal, XP will run faster. Other than that, the choice between the two is purely aesthetic.

Well, for right now I'd choose xp. Because Iv'e had alot of software compatibility issues with vista. But if your buying a new pc I would go with vista, the reason is, why would you buy old technology? Slowly but surely they will get the bugs worked out. Plus newer software might be made just for vista and not xp kinda like windows 98, go with vista it ain't that bad.

It's not that bad.

Honestly, it depends on how powerful your new laptop is, and what programs you want to run on it.

Go through and make a list of the programs you intend to use and see if they are all Vista compatible.

As for your computer, it's pretty essential that it has a decent amount of RAM, (at least a gig, but preferably two), a decent sized harddrive, especially if you're using it to store media (windows vista is a little bigger than xp in terms of hard drive demands), and also, probably most importantly, make sure it has a decent video card, especially if you're using it for media playback. Vista has a nifty new feature that makes sections of most windows or programs transparent, which is pretty, but will suck the life out of your video card when you try to play a movie.

There was similar debate between win 95 vs win98, win 98 vs win xp and now between win xp vs vista. Check the history, the winner is usually what Microsoft decides (even though people cheer for the older operating system).

So ultimately win vista will win as Microsoft will stop supporting win xp and most programs will be develop for vista only (like Microsoft directx 10, etc). So buy now so you will be better prepared when that day comes.....

I'm happy with XP. It is the most reliable version of windows I've ever used. I haven't tried Vista yet but it needs a lot of resources and it has compatibility problems with some older software programs that are still very popular.

Vista just needs a powerful computer to run. If your computers gonna be like this or worse go with XP:
1 GB RAM
AMD x2 ~OR~ Intel Dual Core
80GB Hard drive
