Anyone who actually understood fascism, would realize that liberals are much closer to it than conservatives and republicans.

In a fascist state, free speech is not allowed. Think about it honestly for a second. The group in this country that does its best to repress free speech is the group on the left. To them, the only free speech is speech that they agree with. Anyone else is shouted down or forced to be quiet.

As with most issues on the left, if you have no logic or facts on your side, simply scream loudly and try to intimidate everyone around you.

Nationalism is what breeds Fascism under extreme circumstances and a certain amount of "chance" is involved too...

George Bush is stubborn, willfull and does not have Americas best interest at heart.... that does not mean we have a fascist ruler.... only that we are closer to it than previously.

Republicans are Nationalists these days... that's for sure.

But I think that there are still plenty of reasonable people in America (despite what it looks like sometimes) that would stop Fascism before it became what you could expect from the 3rd Reich.

I heard someone say one time, that the next holocaust will be against the Gays... I was astounded that they didn't know that the first one was. Where did they think the Pink Triangle comes from?

TJ - your definitions from Wikipedia are correct - but your comparison with democrats which follows is very much askew. It is Republicans who ALWAYS put the needs of the state "fiscal responsibility" before the needs of the people who live in it.

You believe everything you read in a book? Don't you realize an individual with an agenda writes definitions. Did you know the currently excepted definition of fascism was written by a socialist.
Did you ever here about a book called the Bible?

Fairy tales are still being written today.

Don't take heed to a definition written by a person whose sole objective is to end capitalism.

Historically, currently or by definition?

Historically and by definition they are vastly different.

"Republicanism is the ideology of governing a nation as a republic, with an emphasis on liberty, rule by the people, and the civic virtue practiced by citizens."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republicanism

"Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers individual and other societal interests subordinate to the interests of the state."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism

From this definition it would seem that the current Democratic party is actually closer to Fascism. It certainly hasn't remained true to its roots.

I think you may be confusing the term republicanism with neoconservativism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoconservativism

However, the blurring of definitions and promotion of division based on stereotype is rather typical and encouraged in bipartisan politics. Hence, the Democrats are all considered socialist or communist liberals as opposed to classical liberals, and unfortunately the socialist type seems to be the majority of what that party consists of. And the Republicans are neo-cons, religious right, or evil capitalists (imperialist, oligarchist, etc.) as opposed to the plain old traditional conservative, but again it unfortunately seems like the majority of the party consists of the neo-con/RINO types.

If the Democratic party still held to the ideals of Jefferson's Democratic-Republican party it might actually be worth something, but it has been quite the opposite of that for a long time. Likewise if the Republican party still held to it roots, it might actually be worth something. However they are both currently, for the most part, the same statist representation with a different name.

The seeds of fascism in the United States have not only sprouted, they have taken root, and the weed is thickening daily.

Any doctrine that weakens personal responsibility for judgment and for action helps create the attitudes that welcome and support the totalitarian state.

In the angry 21st century politics of the world's only Superpower, the official doctrine of "Love it or leave it" too often permeates the media and the schools, two institutions that foster incompetent thinking. Robotically placing a hand on the heart with a tear in the eye while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance as a loyalty oath qualifies as incompetent thinking. In contrast, critical thinking might suggest that this public display of group-think allegiance is anathema to a free society. One might wonder about the purpose of this collective activity that recognizes non-participants as outsiders? Critical thinking people might wonder what has changed the U.S. flag into the logo of the corporate state? What has desecrated the former people's flag and morphed it into a symbol for the greed, corruption and avarice of the rich, wealthy class.

both are conservative, and really align themselves with business over labor, and believe that by taking care of the elite, the nation is better served. What is the difference? Its a matter of degree.....lets just say that fascism is republicans on steroids.

Republicans fight Fascism.
