I use Mozilla Firefox as my web browser and am wondering if it is possible to delete all instances of Internet Explorer and if it is, is it safe to do or will it mess everything up? I am asking this question for two computers, Compaq Presario notebooks, one with XP and one with Vista.

With Windows XP and Vista, IE is too tightly integrated into the operating system for you to delete it and have Windows work properly. The help and support function alone requires IE to work, as do other windows components. While using Firefox as your default browser is certainly a good idea in my opinion, you can't just delete IE.

No it's not safe and I wouldn't advise it unless you really know what you are doing.

It can be done but certain web sites (windows update and some internet banking) will only work with IE.

IE is built in to windows and is more than just a browser.

Make Firefox your default browser and leave IE alone.

Good luck.

Vista is not all that it is cracked up to be. My advise to you is to leave "Internet Explorer", in you system. Especially being that you have not stated that it is causing you any problems.

There is a risk with both Windows XP and Vista that you will create a problem, if you remove Internet Explorer. Best leave things as is, especially being your system is working fine.

It's actually not usually even possible. It's considered a system file. If you delete it, Windows will just restore it from it's program cache within about 20 seconds.

It is almost impossible to completely remove IE. Even if you succeed, how will you get your Microsoft updates? You will have to use IE to get updates. You should leave it alone if for no other reason but updates.
