I doubt it will look like anything out of the Jetsons or Blade Runner. But cities almost always have higher costs of living than elsewhere, mostly due to their higher taxes. And I think tax rates generally will continue to rise in the future. I would not be surprised if NYC had a sales tax of more than 15 or 20% by then, with equally high property, income and other taxes.

The continually rising cost of living will spur demands by the poor for increased subsidies, public housing, etc., which of course will drive taxes even higher, thus creating more demand for gov't services, thus raising taxes even higher, etc. etc. This will probably destroy the middle class, leaving only the wealthy who can afford the high cost of living there, and the poor who are dependent on the same gov't largely responsible for keeping them poor.

This will probably be the situation in most cities, not just NYC.

2050.. that's 42 years and a few weeks away. So, go back 42 years to 1963. I would guess the cost of living in NYC back then was expensive relative to most of the cities across America.

And I would say it will be expensive still in 2050. Yes, it may have more slums.. slums and wealth together. Probably not much for a middle class.

I think that in 1950 people thought that New York would be much different than it is today.

in response to your question...I'm guessing it would much more expensive given the cost of living and jetpack fuel.
