You do mean a thesis STATEMENT, don't you? Not a scholarly research paper as the final requirement for a degree?
OK, then, a thesis statement is to an essay what a topic sentence is to a paragraph--one sentence that states the overall main idea of the whole piece of writing. It should NOT say something like "This essay is about . . ." or "It is the purpose of this essay to . . . ," either of which just puts off your having to come to grips with the topic. Instead, make a definite statement about the topic. If you're writing an argumentative essay, take a position on the issue and state it in your thesis. If you're writing a comparison/contrast, state the essential difference or similarity in the thesis.
You didn't ask where the thesis should go, but the answer is, ideally, at the end of the introduction, so that you hit the reader with it after two or three sentences in which you catch his attention and lead up to the main idea.

First, you have to think of what you're trying to say. What point do you want to make? Thats step one. Find an opinion, state it in your opening paragraph.
In the sentences after which you state your thesis, write some supporting sentences that outline HOW you are going to prove your point, sum up your supporting information in an easy way that lets the reader know whats to come later.
Devote a paragraph to each supporting piece of information, thoroughly explaining its relevance to proving your thesis.
When you are finished, wrap it all up by efficiently re-capping the information and thesis you have presented in your conclusion paragraph.

Think of a 5-paragraph essay:
Intro ending with thesis statement
Body Paragraph 1
Body Paragraph 2
Body Paragraph 3
Conclusion
Now, multiply it by 5, for a 15-page thesis.
The Intro will be the research up until your main idea.
The Thesis statement will be one page.
You'll have three sections of four pages for your three main ideas supporting your thesis.
Your conclusion will be a page or two.
Followed by footnotes page & Bibliography page.

A thesis is a sentence about what you paper is going to be about. You don't want to make it to detailed because you want everything in the paper to be able to relate to it. Your paper needs to prove that the thesis is right.

A thesis? Are you in grad school? If so, you should know the answer to that already - do research and write your conclusions based on that research.
