well, if he is there on his own, i am guessing that he already has everything he needs there... he was born with the instinct to survive, he knows what he is doing... i don't really see any harm in finding him a playmate, if you like but she may not stay... who really knows WHAT is keeping him there... a couple summers ago we found a teeny tiny one, about the size of a quarter, we kept him for a while and painted his back, and then the next fall my husband found him WAY back in the woods. now, if this turtle is in captivity they LOVE tomatoes and other veggies. last summer we attended this 'turtle seminar' and the naturalist there said the biggest mistake people make when keeping a turtle in captivity is not giving it a proper diet... i think that she said to give them bugs or worms along with the veggies.... oh, and they carry salmonella... so be sure to wash and sanitize your hands after playing with the critter.

I'm sure he's fine on his own. Leave him alone as long as your back yard as a good habitat, but I'm sure he wouldn't be upset if you threw some extra vegetable matter out there for him to eat.

In many parts of their range, it is illegal to catch box turtles.

Even besides that, if it can freely come and go, it will find what it wants better than we can guess what it wants.

Enjoy it, but leave it alone.

To give it a healthy life, leave it alone.
