...I couldn't disagree more with that myth. I always have found the majority of NYers to be helpful, friendly, and proud of their city.
Are they rushed? They have to be, they're a busy people.
Are they cautious? They have to be, we're not talking about Oz here.
Are they open-minded? Well, in a city that attracts people from 170 different nations, why wouldn't you be?
Do they help their fellow human beings in times of dyer need? NYers seem to be among the first to do so. Remember 9-11?
I live in middle America (Kentucky) and I believed the whole "New York rude" myth UNTIL I visited. Now, I want to thank NYers for your gift to the world: Your great city!
NYers present a sense of realism, showing both the tough attitude acquired from gritty yesteryear (1965-95) and the human spirit and compassion. NYers are also better than the flakes in L.A. and real jerks of Chicago.

And i love it All the times I was there i found the people couldn't be nicer of course there is always the odd 1 or 2 people who are horrible but you get that everywhere you go.
I love New York and New Yorkers

Thank You....I am a New Yorker . As a former NYS Detective; I worked across the street from WTC & was one of those who rescued others on 9-11 & was lucky enough to come home to my wife on 9-11. It's a day which I will never forget; but I don't talk about it much either. Now that I am retired from my job....I am seriously considering retiring to what I understand to be God's Country.....either Tennessee or Kentucky. I hope others accept " Yankees " as openly as you apparently do ?

How ironic. You question the New York stereotype, but in the same question state your own stereotypes of LA and Chicago. I've lived in both LA and Chicago and I disagree vehemently. Yes there are jerks in Chicago, but that is far from everyone. There are flakes in LA, but not everyone is. Just like there are jerks in New York, but they aren't the majority.
People who are ignorant of other places always have assumptions to make. You've opened your mind to NY, now you need to realize that you can't draw conclusions about other places without first-hand knowledge and extensive experience.

FAUGEDABOUT IT! I live in NY and travel to other states and a lot of ill-informed people think the worst of NYers but like you said its an awful stereotype that people that are quick to judge would come up with

thanks for your kind words about New Yorkers. I stay in NYC yet i'm no longer a community. It took me a lengthy time period to get used to the quick paced ecosystem. 2 events confirmed me that New Yorkers are distinctive the finished human beings contained in the international. One change into 9/11. the way that individuals banded at the same time change into impressive. The blackout we had change into also an exceedingly good time. there change into the prospect that there may were genuine chaos if human beings had gotten out of hand. New Yorkers took it in stride and it change into impressive to exhibit screen the cooperation of everybody regardless of having no electrical energy. a collection of my co-workers and myself shared a pair slices of pizza with a mom and her little boy. She had to pay us yet for sure we refused. human beings do not look frustrating sufficient to work out the deep down compassion of latest Yorkers and basically see the floor. in the adventure that they took the time to look deeper, NYer's don't have the picture they have.

Met some great people on the East Coast, but for the most part the holier-than-thou attitude was a bit much. Laughable after a while. My sister says LA is the same.

I think because those of us who don't live in big cities think that living in NY is a daily battle for survival ranging from finding parking spots, seats in the underground train, beibng stuck in traffic, surviving Wall Street jungle and the risk of being mugged on any given day in borad daylight. Does this kind of life not automatically turn people into jerks ?

I don't know why some people think that.
I love NYC.....and we visit there at least twice a year to see plays, do some shopping, have a few good meals.
I love that they're all different and that it takes a lot of get them upset.

Its a silly stereotype just like saying folks from Kentucky have a moonshine still in their back yard...... People actually believe in stereotypes, sad really.
