it is an American Standard, Fredom 80, single stage. for the home. about 5 yrs. old
first the problem: the flame would die out in the middle of the cycle then it won't relight. some times the flame stays on for hours (becuase when it lights we try to get all we can before we have to turn it off). i replaced the Flame Sensor(thermal couple?) furnace worked for rest of day but still having problems.once in a while the ignitor will be glowing and the furnace won't light off the get.
ALSO: somtimes i get an error code, for- open tempreture limit circuit.

thanx for any help or suggestions!

Sounds like one of the other sensors on your furnace is failing. Each one needs to be checked and replaced as necessary.

Call a heating professional.

First check your filter, if it is dirty replace it, or clean it if it is the type that is reusable. If this doesn't help, then, and if you have a volt / ohm meter that will test continuity, with an audible sound. With the power off (unplugged) check for continuity across the safety / limit switches. Find each limit switch, remove one wire, and check for continuity across the spade terminals. If each has continuity when cold, the heat exchanger limit is probably the culprit.
Intermittent problems are sometimes hard to diagnose.

I agree with John. In addition if you mechanically you should be able to replace the motor yourself and the capacitor. If you get the parts yourself motor and capacitor your probably looking around 120-140 if ordered online. Like John said always replace the cap that rated for the new motor. The motor at some point is just going to seize and start tripping the breaker.

this sounds like a problem that you probably shouldn't fix unless you know what you're doing, as it doesn't sound like a wiring or sensor related problem. there may be a gas flow issue inside the furnace itself, i recommend calling someone. sorry couldn't be of more help

Sounds like a bad control board, but there's no way to say for sure without testing it. Call a local HVAC tech would have to be my advice also.
