Definition
The log of a number to a given base is the power to which the base must be raised to give th number.

In this case the base is taken as 3:-

log 9 = x
3^x = 9
x = 2

log base3 of 9 =x
(log 9) / (log 3) = x ----------->since log9=2log3
(2log3) / (log 3) = x
Therefore we cancel out the log 3 from top and bottom
x = 2
