The Dark Ages-between 313 and 1400AD-were tough. Lots of tribal warfare and disease that spread along trading routes. Religion was used as a centering device--and comforting. Life was lived by the seasons.

There must have been good times--you can see that in the art done during that era. A lot of art was patron paid for and had religious content but often in the background you can see merriement. What is crazy anyway? Our times are crazy too.Humans always try to have fun even during hard times. Read Chaucer and that should tell you a lot even though that is the later middle ages.

I don't think it was any different then it is now. Of course you didn't have modern medicine, most women that had babies, only one in four lived and if that one lived to a teen age, they were lucky. Disease was rampant in the cities, food was short due to the landlord, shareholder type of living. It was going on in Europe in the late 1800's and made for many people to immigrate to the U.S. for freedom.
The laws were cruel, they favored the wealthy, the poor had no protectors and the "Old Baily" (Prison) in England saw many deaths from the poor that couldn't pay their bills.

well, think about it, plumbing wasnt invented yet, or electricity so you had to take a dump in a hole, fill it up and dig another one. you had to light fires every day and keep them lit, crime was rampant as was disease, so if you didnt realize it yet the life expectancy was very short....
