I have shared my home with parrots for many years and once in my younger years I was a manager of a carriage company. Needless to say I have been around many parrot people though not many private horse owners other than those I just happen to bump into in casual conversation.
My question stems from this:
I have met too many people over the years... too many people to count... that tell me that they used to have a horse when they were a kid or that they once had a (name a kind of parrot).
Where are they now? Where did they go. I am sure that many of the birds died as they are easy to kill with improper care... but what of the horses?
Where are all of the childhood horses and the ponies that the kids outgrow?
I am not implying anything here as I honestly don't know. I have assumptions but I don't like them so I thought I would just come out and ask.
Educate me please!

Lucy: Yes, I have my parrots in my will because I am pretty sure that my 11 yr old Citron 'too will outlive me. Most of the people that used to have birds it is usually cockatiels and budgies which I am sad to assume were probably fed with seed, fogotten and died... :(

Ice Queen:
So is that the way that it is with most ponies? Do they get "recycled" throughout thier lives?
What is the average lifespan of a shetland or a welch etc?

My first pony, which I got when I was 7 and he was 17, died 10 years later. Alot of people sell their ponies when the kids outgrow them, and they go to new children. My daughter's pony, Midnight, who's now 18-will live the rest of her days on our farm, giving the occasional ride to my daughter and the neighbor kids, otherwise, just eating me out of house and home. lol My second horse, which I got when I was 13, is still with me-he's now 28. I do have a tortoise which is in my will-because I'm sure he'll oulive me and my husband by many, many years!

Horses may go on to another good home where they will be loved and live out their years. More commonly they're passed from person to person, often facing neglect and/or abuse, and end up in the slaughter house. It's sad, but it's true. Horses are expensive, and when you have a 30-something year old horse that has been mistreated and is no longer "useable," they end up getting sold to the meat man.

That's a great question .. Where *did* they go? Maybe the parrots are still alive, since some live to 80 years!

I'm 17 right now, but I own an African Grey. When I'm older, I'll be looking around for a new home for him, because he might outlive me! I'll have a back-up home. :)

when I saw this question, I felt the asker was inquiring on where do parrots and horses go after they die. Now I am not sure, but I think their spirit lives on after death.

I will relate what happened to me, after I lost a favorite cat. I didnt know where he was because he had gotten out of the house and hadnt come back home for several days. I was so worried about him, I was grieving. then one evening I "heard" the cat sneeze, like he use to do when he was there at home. Now the cat wasnt there in body, but I sort of felt he was in the spirit world, and he had come back to tell me he was ok in animal heaven. I felt such a peace after that, and didnt grieve for him anymore.

This could be where animals go, I dont know. But it is a comfort to think they go to a good home after they leave this earth.

horses are usually sold to new homes when they are outgrown and some people keep there old horses for there children or there nieces and nephews to ride. Some older horses are sold as pasture mates for lone horses. As for the parrot i know people who have left there birds with there parents when they move out or go to school. other people sell them to new homes or give them away to bird sanctuaries. I know of a woman in my area who takes in unwanted farm birds like chickens, ducks, geese , and turkeys.

They may have died, they might have gone to a shelter, or a farm. Many people who outgrow their animals dump them off at a shelter. For horses, sadly, they may have been sold to a slaughter house, at an auction, or for glue. Or, hopefully, to a nice farm or horse-back riding stable.

I know several people who still have their childhood horse.. One of the horses is 28, and his owner is 35. Not everyone dumps their horses when they outgrow them or they move on.

The horses and ponies usually get put down and made into glue sticks.

at least they are still serving a purpose.

Next time I buy a glue stick I will think of you....

isn't that neat?
