You didn't start too late. Begin with a little bit of baby cereal. Make sure it's thin enough. Expect that he'll spit it out, you'll scoop it back in, he'll spit it out. It takes a while to learn to maneuver that tongue!
Only introduce ONE food at a time, starting with baby cereal. Don't start off feeding him a variety of foods. First, to help him ease into this new skill. And secondly, so that if he has an allergic reaction, you'll know what food he's having a reaction to.
You can use a bottle to feed him cereal. Be sure the nipple has a wide enough hole and the cereal is thinned down enough.
RELAX. You're both doing fine! Be patient with yourself and your beautiful boy. There's no rush to add food at this point, as long as he's growing and developing normally.

the middle of the first year is when you should start. Look for readiness signs (sitting up and teeth). You didn't start too late. Actually, you might be starting too early (for him). My friends baby refused food until 12 months and she if a healthy 7 year old now.
Some kids need a few extra months to be mature enough to handle the food. some kids who refuse foods are actually prone to allergies and so it's better to wait w/ these kids (b/c the earlier you introduce the food, the more likely they are to be allergic to it).
banana is a great first food. Slice off a bit, smash it w/ a fork until soft. Banana tastes similar to breastmilk so babies are more likely to take it.

The usual age to start jar food is 4 months and then at 6 months get them the stage 2 or 3 jar food. Start them on veggies first then fruits because if you start them on fruits first they will never eat the veggies.

He might just not be ready for solids yet, or he might need smaller bites at first. Try giving him a very small bit of mashed banana or applesauce on the tip of your finger. If he gags on that, wait a bit and try again in a few weeks or so.

you could thicken it up with cereal.
just keep offering it.
he'll get the idea sooner or later
when my daughter refused to eat any baby food of any kind at 7 months(introduced them at 4 months at first 1oz baby food 1 oz cereal), i made the hold in the nipple of a bottle bigger and mixed a 4 oz jar of fruit or veggies with 2 oz of formula. i saw this in a baby magazine somewhere.
oh, and my kids both gaged on the thin baby food
