Out of the 4 main characters (Chillingworth, Dimmesdale, Hester, Pearl) who, in your opinion suffered the most?

Probably Dimmesdale, because he was tormented by his guilt and the fact that, unlike Hester, he didn't expiate it (except inwardly). Pearl seems to have suffered the least, since she had a loving mother to compensate for whatever she didn't have. Hester seems to have risen above the social ostracism and the fact that Dimmesdale let her down, and Chillingworth, if he suffered, didn't recognize the suffering for what it was.

I think that Dimmesdale suffered the most, some people would say Hester, but her secret was out in the open. Yes, having it in the open caused her a lot of grief and ostracizing, but a lot of the pain in suffering is having to KEEP something a secret...like Dimmesdale did. Sorry I don't have any more to say on his suffering, it's been YEARS since I read the book in high school.

I think Pearl (Hester's daughter) suffers the most. She has to watch her mom be judged and scorned, and she has to grow up without a father. Plus, she is marked as a bastard child and is judged to be touched by evil without having even done anything wrong. Basically, she does not stand a chance in that society.
As far as Dimmesdale goes, he deserved to suffer the way he did, because he was too much of a pansy-*** to either admit to his role in Hester's "sin" or to run off with her and be the father that Pearl deserved to have.
