Can anyone help me with a step-by-step procedure to connect a Vista PC to a Win XP laptop using RJ-45 cable?
My PC, a HP Pavillion Slimline has NO port for crossover cables.
Thanks

Connect the RJ-45 ethernet cable between the two computers.

Run the network wizard inside the PC to establish a local network. Give the network a name. When it asks, make a disk to use on the second computer.

Go to the laptop, insert the disk made by the wizard in the PC. Run the disk and it will finish the installation of the local network.

The two machines should now see each other.

You may need to turn on sharing on the hard drives of both machines, to allow file transfers and the like. This can be done by opening Windows Explorer and right clicking on the C: drive on each machine. Click on the sharing option and set up file sharing. A small hand will appear under the icon showing the hard drive in Explorer, indicating that this is now a shared file.

The safest way to do this, is to use a router. This will give you a hardware firewall to protect your local network from outside attack. And will also make it easy for both machines to access the internet at the same time. If your laptop has a wifi card, you can get a wireless router and not need a physical cable. Or even if there is not wifi card now, your can buy an adapter for the laptop that will work with a wireless router. Should be able to get every thing for under $50.

Both computers should have network interface cards (NICs) with RJ-45 ports. If so, just connect them using a crossover cable. The difference is in the way the cable is made up, not in the port. I am not familiar with the HP Pavilion Slimline, but if it's newer than 4 or 5 years, it should have a NIC.

Well, if your Pavillion does not have an ethernet connector, you aren't going to connect it with an RJ45 connector/ethernet cable!

You can get usb to ethernet adapters or PCMCIA to ehternet.
However, I find it surprising these days that a standard ethernet adapter is NOT on your laptop.

A crossover cable is just a standard ethernet cable modified to directly connect a network connector to a network connector.

If per chance you have a wireless router connect both to the router and use that! Or simply get the USB transfer cable that is available for VISTA to XP, it actually is FASTER than ethernet if both machines are USB2.0!

what do you mean it has no crossover port? it has no LAN ports? all LAN ports can accept crossover and straight-trough cables.
