You can download "Avast", free antivirus program and you will on the hour auto updates and a background scanner all for free. http://www.avast.com
Or you can make a one time person and use the antivirus program that I run for the past ten years. $29.99 get you daily updates and all new versions free for life. I have never had one virus in ten plus years. Program is out of Beijing, China. And used by the Govt Of China.

You can also take the program for a thirty day test drive 100% complete with a thirty day free registration key. After the thirty days you will have to make the one time purchase.

best is to general. Some are better then others, but each has strong and weak points.
The most used are AVG free and Avast Home, both of which are free and do in some cases a better job then Norton. You could also try PC tools antivirus but I really don't like it after it let a virus in that crippled my OS, but I think that might have been a fluke.

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. Uses less then 10 MB RAM on my machine. And did I mention that it's free!
Download here:

BTW, Avoid the free version of an anti-virus called AVG, it has horrible virus detection capibilities.
You must totally remove your old Norton before installing any other anti-virus program, or conflicts may occur.
Enjoy!

Most people here will say AVG or Avast, because they are the most popular.
There is one little gem which isn't so well known, but is EXTREMELY good. It is Avira AntiVir PE Classic - search for reviews. It's detection rates are simply stunning (av-comparatives.org), it is extremely light on resources (from personal experience of trying AVG, Avast and Avira, Avira uses the least amount of resources).
