this is because the variable "X" could equal anything and if x was less than seven you would have to divide the equaltion by zero of a negative number which is not possible

Good question! Sine you can plug any number in for X, let's use two examples to show why the answer is not 2.

If x is 100, it would read 2(100)-7/100-7 -->
this is simplified to 193/93 = 2.075

Now, if we make x = 5, let's see how it is different.
2(5)-7/5-7
10-7/-2
3/-2 = -1.5

There is no single numeric answer, since you don't have a defined value for x.

Distribute. 5(x-5) 7(x+2) 5x-25 +2x = 7x+14 - 39 Simplify (combine like words on each and each side). 7x-25 = 7x-25 because that each and each side equivalent a similar problem, the answer is B) All genuine numbers

I do not understand your logic. That fraction cannot be simplified more. It is a continuous function that has a non-constant y value over all real x values besides 7. It would equal 2 only at its limits of infinity.

This function is a continuous function. Therefore, there is no definitive answer for what the function is equal to in this question. Without knowledge of what your value for x is, I can not begin to guess what your function is equal to, seeing as there are billions of possibilities for what your function could equal!

because to solve the problem one needs to no what X is. normally one would take your first phrase "2x-7" and solve for X, but since we don't no what 2x-7 equals we cant solve for x. also you cannot divide 2x-7 by x-7 as you would if you were dividing the phrase by 2 to get x by itself.

if it was just 2x/x then it would be equal to 2 but as you minus an ODD number the answer could never be 2

2007-12-02 05:12:33 · answer #7 · answered by wag1 2 · 0 1

2x-7/x-7 isn't equal to 2 because its 2x not just x:

example 2(-1) - 7 / -1 - 7
_______-2 - 7 / -8
_______-9 / -8
_______-1.125 which obviously isn't 2.

If it was 2(x - 7) / x - 7 then it would be equal to 2.

Hope that was helpful. :D

b/c the 2 does not multiply all the way through the numerator...therefore you can't cancel the x-7

You left something out of the problem - you didn't show an equation, so there's no way to calculate what is.
