i landed mid-shin on the corner of a ledge i was trying to get up onto. I could hardly walk on it, but i had batting practice and i had to run on it a little before i collapsed. It swelled immediately and has a horrible bruise (it looks like i grew another knee). I still can't walk on the leg without pain shooting through me. is this a severe bone bruise or worse? i do not want to go to the ER for a few more days so I can see if the swelling goes down after a while since I just had to go for x-rays on my foot and knees

I have iced it for quite a while, so the skin is numb but the bone still hurts. the pain has dulled, but when i put pressure on the leg, the swollen area and surrounding area still hurts. what would the difference be if it were a bone bruise or fracture?

If it swelled up immediately, there's a good chance it's a fracture. You could have impeded circulation in the bone or part of the leg.
If you don't need the leg any more and don't mind it being amputated, then go ahead and see if it gets better by itself.
If you'd rather not walk around on a metal leg for the rest of your life, go to the emergency room now.

With shooting pain as an indicator, I would recommend that you go immediately to an emergency room. I was a nurse for 15 years and in my experience shooting pain, swelling, and inability to bear weight is an indication of a possible fracture. A bone bruise will give you pain but will allow you to put some weight on the leg. The shin area is subject to bruising frequently due to the minimal muscle coverage but it is also subject to bone fracture and splintering for the same reason. Waiting for the swelling to go down will not help if you have a fx and may cause it to become a compound fx (bone breaks completely and misalligns) or an open compound (bone comes through the skin) which in both cases requires painful resetting by traction or surgery to reset. Seek medical treatment if you are in doubt you have nothing to lose and can only benefit from professional evaluation.

Just from revel in I can let you know a nasty bone bruise hurts for a LONG time. I injured my elbow 6 weeks in the past, they did x-rays, stated it used to be no longer damaged; however it nonetheless wakes me up at night time considering the fact that it hurts with any stress in any respect! They did inform me to return again after the swellling went down and get an additional x-ray, in order that probably a well concept for you. You will have to name the orthopod's workplace and inform them you're nonetheless having disorders and could love to be visible for a comply with-up appointment. Ice it after any recreation, then use a few warmness to assuage it within the night time or earlier than bedtime. Good success!
