In england our prisoners are not made to suffer for what they've done. I, for one, think this is wrong. They are treated humanly, because some idiots decided that they should be. So according to these people a murderer should be treated with respect, and shouldn't be treated like the horrible person he is.

I would just like your views on whether you think this is right or not.

The thing is over here life imprisonment is only about 12 years, maybe less if they're good.

I didn't mean we should torture the prisoners btw. All I meant was that they're not being punished, it's more like a holiday camp to them. They get ice cream in the summer and have play stations, and if they're bad they get them taken off of them.

Definately not Right at all!!! They are there for punishment reasons and they shouldn't be treated with respect at all, they should be suffering everyday of the rest of their time in prison. I don't understand the Justice system any more, it seems like they are making life easier for the people who are criminals, they seem to have a better life in prison than they did when they were outside. It dosen't make sense, I'm with you on this!!!

There's a difference between being treated humanely and the way prisoners are treated. Prisoners should be fed only as much as they need, have the bare minimum of everything (to me, that's humane), rather than being kept in the hotel-like conditions they are (I can only speak for the UK).

I'm also for rehabilitation where possible, though, admittedly, it's not possible with some people. The government's idea of rehab is education (as someone has mentioned), but to me, knowing that reoffending would mean spending time in prison again should be a reason to reform.

Anyway, this isn't a simple issue, but that's my view.

Of course they shouldn't be made to suffer.

What will be created will be a vicious cycle of turning non violent criminals into soldiers in the Gladiator academy we call the prison system.

Study after study show the rehabilitation and counseling have better results than incarcerating individuals without resources for rehab in terms of reoccuring crimes and parole violations.

Some people are beyond punishment. How do you punish a man who has killed 10 people? Can you kill him 10 times?

Of course not, so logically the punishment cannot be porportionate. For criminals like the example i used above, there is only one recourse and that is life in prison without the possiblity of parole.

Instead of focusing on whether or not we should torture criminals, focus on whether or not the laws are strict enough for crimes like Child Molestation + rape + kiddy porn + murder + Embezellment on a grand scale + Assault with a deadly weapon + Robbery are enough.

Do you think we should lock up crack heads for 10 years and the kiddy porn producer for 10?

The crack head already lives the worst possible life, after all, he's a CRACK HEAD. Why our countries choose to persocute the people who are by far the worst off in society and not focus on the child molesters and kiddy porn artist is beyond me. ALL of our resources should be used to protect our children from monsters and we should stop demonizing the depressed, mentally ill and poor drug addicts and start getting them the help they deserve to better our communities. We can't cure murders but we can rehab addicts. Lets get our priorities straight and everything else will fall in place

Being in prison is itself a cause of suffering, as you have no control over your own life and can't do what you want.

You're controlled and restricted from when you wake up, until you go to sleep.

No genuinely human being thinks anyone, even prisoners, should not be treated humanely.

The other thing to consider (since human decency means nothing to you) is the results you're after. If you want to make people be even worse people than they were before incarceration, then maximize their suffering.

If you want people to become civilized, you need to treat them in a civilized way.

Ice cream? Give me a break. Do you really think ice cream makes up for being incarcerated?

If you don't want to live in a civilized society, you could always move over here to the U.S. Our prison system is utterly barbaric, and our recidivism rate through the roof. You'd love it here.

You know if you honestly think about it, in their eyes [prisoners] they did something respectful. Most murders don't just go around killing people. There is always a connection and a reason why they did that. So if you treat them like **** they're just going to keep doin ****. Treat them with respect and they'll fit into the mold of prison.

I think that if you treat a person poorly they will not learn anything and when they get out they will have a chip on their shoulder at that is not good for society. If you treat them as people (not to say that you have to be nice, just don't treat them like trash) and you give them the proper treatment, hopefully when they get out they can be a benefit and not a drain on the population. There are exceptions and that is what lifetime sentencing and mental institutions are for.

ME!!!!!<>I think they should get basic human rights, but law libraries (Do you know how much a single law book can cost?), enough gym equipment to make them able to participate in the Mr. Universe Contest, when I can't afford a gym or even a lower level treadmill, college degrees when I had to pay off my loans, all of this is going too far. They're the ones who chose to leave society and its rules; they shouldn't be treated to luxuries and extras because of it. (I'm in the US by the way.)

They are treated humanly here too - to a point. But I for one don't think being restricted in your every movement, not to mention the sex with guys in not too much fun. So for most people it would be pretty horrible. But for some it must be pretty fun, since something like 2/3rds are back within 2 years of release.

Approximately 94 - 98% of all incarcerated individuals will return to the streets of society. Would you like that number of folks who have been treated poorly while incarcerated to come live in YOUR neighborhood??\]

BTW, murderers constitute an extremely small percentage of incarcerated individuals, and first degree murderers, even a smaller proportion.

It all depends on what the crime they committed was.
If it was seriously bad like raping someone then in my opinion they should not be killed of such but should be tortured! Lol I'm not a mean person but if someone has done something of which is highly mean then they shouldn't be happy at all.
