Your dog is bored. Can you blame him for finding a way to entertain himself?

Give him some exercise, like a nice walk twice a day. Give him some mental stimulation, check into some fun obedience classes. Try learning clicker training - that's a lot of fun.

They're not meant to 'stay in the back yard' like lawn ornaments. Interact with him!

First, check in the Dog area for suggestions on the cause/stopping of digging, but here's my take. He's a big dog, and may be bored, and dogs love to dig - especially if you've got good soil, so he may need to have more activity.

Also, digging a hole and lying in it can help a dog keep cool, and many dogs that do this have a favorite spot.

To keep him from digging there, fill the hole in to about 1" deep, and then put a large piece of chicken wire down, and then put the rest of the dirt on top - and sod the area. A dog rolling on fresh sod won't hurt the sod (it will help compact it to the soil) but a dog rolling on a freshly-seeded lawn is a big pain.

Bear in mind you may get him to stop digging in that one spot, only to have him select another spot.

Or, you could use his excavating skills to help you plant shrubs and perennials.....

As distasteful as it may sound to you, it because he is bored and lacks the attention that is needed for this type of dog personality. That is where you come in. It's your job to make sure he is happy and not bored with his life.
I hope he is not a tied up dog because what ever you do may not help as long as he is tied up.
Have you ever watched the "Dog Whisperer" on TV? He always say try and think like the dog... So put yourself in the dogs 'shoes" and ask yourself what would you need to stop digging. In all probability you would say "self" I would like to go inside and be with the family more often. I like being around my family. Then you would probably think "self" why do you dig so much and you would answer "I've got nothing else to do" nobody plays with me. I really would like to play ball with someone. I'd like to take a nice 30 or 40 minute walk too.
then come home and lay down and take a nap inside with my family.
Maybe if they don't have enough time for me I could have a play date with Rover down the street.
Just think of your dog as another member of the family and you'll know why and what to do.
Good Luck to you and your dog.

Positive Reinforcement is what all things living need.

dogs just dig, take him to a dog park where he can do what he pleases, he likely just needs to blow off some steam.
