I need to schedule an appt for my annual exam, but I was wondering at what age we take our daughters to the GYN for the first time? Is it after they start their first period?

No troubles. She is 12 and has already started her period, but I was interested in getting her that new vaccine for cervical cancer. I wasnt sure if they did exams at that age too or not.

Sources differ... 18-21 or sexually active, whichever comes first, unless there's a problem.

Teenage girls should see an OB/GYN between the ages of 13 to 15. While pelvic exams are rarely required during this first visit, this visit helps to establish a relationship with the doctor of your choice and to go over your medical and sexual history (even if you have not had sexual intercourse.) This is a good time to ask questions about sexually transmitted diseases and contraceptives.

13....girls are becoming sexually active WAY younger and there are NOW girls who are 18, and already infected with HIV due to being sexually active with multiple partners from a young age (12-14) the quicker you get your daughter "in the KNOW" the better she can protect herself....thanks to "role models" like Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, and Britney Spears girls are just not preserving their virginity like they use to....watch the MTV videos and see how "glamorized" sex is....

I work with adolescence, and you can miss opportunities quickly, I recently worked with a sixth grade girl who had had sex with her older brothers friend (16) and she was already 3.5 months pregnant....her parents had NO IDEA....she decided to keep the baby, but she will turn 13 and be a mother....

don't be deceived, it is happening MORE and MORE...and we live in the HEART of the BIBLE belt....and this IS a "Christian family" it CAN and WILL happen to anyone...so PROTECTION and EDUCATION are the real preventative measures....

well, i think your daughter would be terrified if you took her to the gyno, i know i would. talk to her regular doctor about an HPV vaccination if your worried about cervical cancer, and if she isn't active, there's no need to go.

Hmn, that one's a bit difficult. Most doctors prefer after the girls have their first experience with sexual intercourse. They don't like to mess with the hymen and such. Unless of course your daughters are experiencing severe symptoms along with their periods, in which case you would need to get them an appointment as well.

my mom took my younger sister at 12

and she had started her period and had boobs

thers no harm in getting checked out!
