Make sure the software is installed properly and you have the cord connected the right way. If it still doesnt work, get a different one that will work with your computer + TV

If like me your laptop has not got a video out it will have a VGA out. I got a male to male VGA cable from maplins for around £6 then plugged it into my 42" LCD TV. Many plasmas also have these ports on the back as well but I have yet to see them on traditional CRT screens.
The procedure is
1. Switch TV and laptop OFF
2. Insert cable into each device
3. switch TV on
4. find the right channel usually AUX
5. Boot laptop.
6. (optional) change laptop resolution to one your TV can display.
good luck

Often you have to switch which input your television is reading from. I have a computer connected to my television as well. I have to switch the TV to read from the SVideo input. Rebooting the laptop after having it plugged in may help as well.
If it's a ThinkPad by IBM or Lenovo, hitting the Fn (Function) + F7 key may help as well. The Fn key is at the bottom left-hand corner of the keyboard.

Read your laptop User Manual and get an S-video cable. It will work if you follow all the instructions.

Laptops are not actually people, and therefore can't 'come up' in that way. Hmmm not much more I can say really, other than just to forget about this whole idea.
