Gas dryers obviously have to be vented to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning...

A lot of moisture and messy lint also come out of dryer vents... heat that could make cooling your house more expensive...

However, I have seen kits for electric dryers with a lint trap that vent indoors for when outdoor venting would be very difficult or impossible... http://www.amazon.com/Jensen-TDIDVK-DRYER-KIT-INDOOR/dp/B000DZFTC6/ref=pd_sim_dbs_hi_title_3

It would probably be a good thing for winter in a cold climate. Why waste the heat? Most heated homes could use a little more humidity...

It doesn't "have" to be, but have you looked at all of the lint that collects around the outside dryer vent? Do you really want all of that floating around the air inside your house?

Amongst the things that are vented from your household dryer, are fine pieces of lint that can get trapped in your lungs, but more importantly is Carbon Monoxide.
