To repel ghost you need to bless the house, so that they will go away , but they won't harm you at all most like they don't know whether your there or if they are dead!

Only the things that the certain spirit be live would repel ghost would repel them.But once they find out or don't believe it anymore, it won't work anymore. They have free will.

You can get rid of demonic ghost by doing a cleansing with sage. The only way to get rid of a intelligent haunt will be to see what there purpose is and try to help them out, as for a residual there is no way to my knowledge to get rid of it.
