Isolate that y by subtracting 6 from both sides:

2y-23=y

Now we can't have that other y there, so subtract 2y

-23=-y

Multiply through by -1

2y - 17 = y + 6

(2y - 17) - y = (y + 6) - y

2y - 17 - y = y + 6 - y

y - 17 = 6

(y - 17) + 17 = 6 + 17

y - 17 + 17 = 6 + 17

y = 23

2y - 17 = y + 6

First add 17 to both sides...

2y = y + 23

Then subtract y from both sides...
