My car (that I bought in July) Broke down on me in the middle of a highway the other day.. Earlier that day I had realized that when I put oil in the night before I forgot to put the oil cap back on. So immediately I connected the two things.. Did I do this by leaving the cap off.. I didnt drive prob more than 20 miles, but there was definitely oil splatter. It's at the mechanic but I havent heard anything yet. Did I do this?? What could it be?? the car wouldnt start back up..

I would really doubt it. The low oil light would have come on way before the car would have quit. I would think the two are unrelated.

What did the engine sound like before the breakdown?
If the check oil light didn't come on and the engine wasn't making strange/ bad sounds, the engine probably isn't damaged.
Even if this is the case you probably need to repair a few things under the hood as well as do some cleanup. Oil splatter is not good for ignition wires, belts or in the long run hoses. It might be one of these things that is causing your problem.

One thing you did mention was that it would not start. That indicates it was turning over. Perhaps you have oil soaked your spark plugs and this would cause the car not to keep running or start. And there are many other areas it soaked that could cause this problem as well. Hopefully you did not hear any rattling before the car came to a sudden stop on you. no smoke out of the tail pipe? These would be indications of engine problems. I`ll keep my fingers x`ed for the oil soaked. Best of luck

some cars will sling nearly all the oil out when the oil cap is left off. There could be either severe damage, or something simple, hard to tell without knowing what type of car, or actually seeing/hearing it first hand.

depends on how much oil you lost. Did you check the dipstick? the other thing is did you overfill the oil the night b4. Why were you low on oil to begin with? Do you have a leak? What is the year make and model of the car?

First... Put the cap back on. Pick up 1 or 2 cans of "Gunk Engine Cleaner", Drive to a do it yourself car wash, (If you have a carburetor cover with a leak proof plastic bag) ... With the engine warm, spray the Gunk on, let it sit for a bit and Power wash it off.

yes probably so, when you left the oil cap off the oil got pumped out of the engine. You will probably have major engine damage for running the engine with little or no oil....
