No, it is NOT a sin. "Sin" is a concept only from the perspective of a primarily religious point of view. The exploration of ones own body is a private and personal thing that is completely natural.

Its funny u use the word sin because then u refering to religion and instead of it being a moral thing. Well if u want religion it does say it in the bible as and Koran, I think its the koran that it is. But moral wise its perfectly healthy.

okay, so lets start at the beginning shall we, Genesis 38:9
"Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother's wife, he wasted his seed on the ground in order not to give offspring to his brother. 10 But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD; so He took his life also."
this is the passage, the one and only passage which modern religions refer to when condemning masturbation. to explain the passage... Onan's brother has died, leaving a childless widow, in Jewish tradition, its Onan's duty to True Leverate, True Leverate is when the brother of the deceased, has sex with his brothers widow, in order for her to have a baby, that will be considered the dead brothers, and will continue the line of the dead brother. The brother in law has no other affairs or obligations to the widow, and will not continue a physical relationship.
In the passage, Onan is having sex with his brothers widow, and he pulls out, spilling his semen on the ground not in his brothers widow. God killed him because he failed to True Leverate, instead he just had sex with his brothers widow, adultery. That's the meaning of this passage, his failure to True Leverate caused his death.
In order for something to be universal of humanity, is must be found in all societies of humanity. Masturbation is not taboo in all societies of humanity. Which means that a taboo against it is purely a cultural thing.
But what is, a universal thing, is masturbation. Babies go through a sexual phase, and this irks some people, but humans are sexual beings and there isn't a time of their life where they ignore this part of themselves. babies can even get an erection, an will rub their genitals because it feels good, just as soon as they will rub their toes.
personally I remember masturbating, not achieving orgasm of course when I was as young as three. Which brings me to the "shame" part of it. Again, if it was universal it would be evident in all societies of humanity, but there are plenty of societies will no social stigma, whether there was an initial shameful feeling I don't know. The fact that small children aren't ashamed, I wasn't, makes me wonder if acculturation "don't touch yourself, your privates are private, masturbation will make your palms hairy" kind of stuff is what causes the initial shameful feeling in Westerners. Perhaps the shameful feeling initially is the bodies way of keeping your sexuality from being completely satisfied with out a partner, which of course means doom for the human race procreative wise.
Well, I guess we can't know if its a sin, because there's nothing that points to it as one, but I guess its good to know the history and to make our own decision ♥

I can give you the Catholic answer. Sexual intercourse, within the bonds of marriage of course, has two purposes. Sex creates new life and also brings a married couple closer together. The Catholic church does not consider anything "wasted" when an infertile married couple has sex.

if you dont do it you will be a pent up angry aggressive jerk and basically make whatever environment you are in more hostile and worse for others. so i guess not doing it is more of a sin than doing it.

According to the Bible I think it is. I don't know the exact scripture but I believe it suggest that it is.
I don't necessarily think it is a bad thing as long as it is mutual with the person you are commited to. I think it becomes wrong if you are in a commited relationship and you masturbate with thoughts of another person in mind.
My opinion...I'm sure you will get a lot of conflicting responses.
