It was Lyndon B. Johnson who was in office when things in Vietnam got "hot"....he used the Gulf of Tonkin incident to crank things up.

And he was (GASP!!!) a liberal democrat!!!!!

Eisenhower pledged our support to France. Kennedy only followed through on his policy and then, of course, Johnson went for it full speed ahead and damn the torpedos. As much as I dislike Nixon, at least he got us out of Vietnam--just not a moment too soon.
